RTM- An Inner-City Success Story WortInvesting In
Having transformed a South Greenville neighborhood corner (Old JJJ’s), community leaders are seeking to transform the lives of hundreds of difficult and troubled youth who have been expelled from public schools because of disruptive behavior and academic shortfalls. Resurrected Treasure Ministries Alternative School, (RTM) after school and summer enrichment programs is located on White Horse Road between what was two night clubs and a convenience store, in an area of too much crime and too little work.
RTM strives creatively to meet youth and families spiritual, social and educational needs through caring, compassion and commitment. RTM has become the last hope for many at-risk youth and individuals labeled “the worst of the worst” ravaged by alcohol, drugs, prostitution, murder and risky life styles.
RTM is an amazing place with an amazing success story. The 900 block on White Horse Road (Old JJJ’s corner), consisting of 5 buildings, was not originally built to help youth. What was once a decadent smoke filled lounge where fights were a daily occurrence for local law enforcement, is now a place for tutoring, GED classes, state of the art computer lab, after school, summer enrichment, parenting programs, teen coffee house, health screenings, recreation programs, family activities, emergency housing, outreach to nearby apartment complexes, and collaborations with social service agencies and churches in community outreach. RTM Alternative School’s hands-on programs have also become a lifeline to youth at the end of their rope and a proven success story.
Youth like 15 year old “Mike” who fell significantly behind in math and reading, got in trouble at school and obviously needed more that an after school program. Then RTM stepped into “Mike’s” life and within a few months “Mike” was testing on or above grade level and is returning to school with confidence, a can-do attitude, and has big dreams for his future. “Mike” is not the same young man.
Denise, a 16 year old, was a disruptive student who was ‘counseled out’ of school
and soon began a free fall, out of control lifestyle. Denise, like many young women in her neighborhood started getting into trouble in the 5th grade. “I would be dead or incarcerated if it were not for Resurrected Treasure Ministries Alternative School. On March 15, 2005, I enrolled as a 10th grader after getting kicked out of the public school and a private school. Resurrected Treasure Ministries Alternative School is a school of excellence!!” Denise Ashley - 2007 graduate
As a 10th grader, she was diagnostically tested at a 5th grade level in English and math. In the Spring of 2007, my CAT5 scores revealed a total battery score of 12+ (in all core subjects areas) and an increase of 4 grade levels in Math. - Dr. Martha Evans
“As a single parent, I enrolled my 8th grade daughter, Aurelle with Dr. Martha Evans
at Restoring the Minds Math and Business Academy in August 15, 2005 and transferred
her to Resurrected Treasure Ministries School of Tomorrow in February 2006. “I give the credit to Resurrected Treasure Ministries Alternative School structured learning
environment which caused Aurelle to get FOCUSED and to COMPREHEND effectively. -Sallie McCain, mother
Based on Aurelle’s Measures of Academic Performance (MAPP) and CAT5 test
scores, Aurelle showed an increase from 5.0 to 8.9 GE in total Reading, (an increase of 3.9); 5.0 to 8.7 in total Language (an increase of 3.7); and 5.0 to 7.8GE in total mathematics. (an increase of 2.8). In 3 months, Aurelle’s total battery score was 8.3GE. Aurelle was accepted at Brashier Middle College Charter High School in August 2006 and is now an A/B student.
Today there are over two hundred students like, “Mike” and Denise who were forced out of public schools in Greenville with nowhere to go, nowhere to turn. And there are many more students who are below the radar screen of the authorities or have fallen between the cracks of government sponsored programs. Their last shot may be RTM’s Alternative School with its tough love approach and after school program, teaching life skills and work habits, counseling and eating nutritious meals. RTM gives these youth a last chance and an understanding that someone cares about them, someone trusts them, and someone believes in them.
Like any opportunity for lasting change, RTM services needs staffing, volunteers, time, investment and there’s much to be done. More youth in Greenville County need this kind of help, a chance to get a high school diploma and enroll in a two or four year college. Our own futures rest in their hands, because you and I also benefit from RTM services. RTM’s proven success is saving us money. Your car is less likely to be broken into, you’re less likely to have to pay for prison, and you’re less likely to have someone who’s on unemployment, and the quality of like for everyone will improve.
Savings from crime alone in this part of Greenville, from 1994 to the present,
estimated at $2.4 million dollars. RTM’s success story is worth investing in.
